  • Loss time injury frequency rate (including temporary workers);
  • Overall loss time frequency rate (including subcontractors);
  • Absenteeism rate.

Our actions

As a responsible employer, the Prayon Group's safety philosophy revolves around management's total commitment to ensuring the physical and moral integrity of everyone who enters our sites, taking care of themselves and others, and improving working conditions on a daily basis. Zero accidents and the protection of workers' health are two of the objectives of this philosophy.

This approach is notably expressed by the implementation of the following principles:

  • Strict compliance with applicable regulations;
  • A QSE vision and strategy focused on behavior, infrastructure and procedures;
  • Procedures dedicated to the various activities;
  • Significant investment in security infrastructure;
  • An analysis and prioritization of health and safety risks and an analysis of incidents/accidents using the cause tree method;
  • Safety, health and well-being training programs;
  • An integrated internal prevention and protection department at each site, with expertise in safety, occupational medicine and ergonomics.

By strictly following these principles, we have been able to reduce the frequency of accidents with loss time injury (ITT)  by 73% between 2012 and 2022.

Loss time injuries 2012 - 2022

*estimate for the period from 2021 to 2022

In 2022, the frequency rate (Tf ) for Prayon personnel and temporary staff was 5.3, with an annual target of 6 and the aim of reaching the only acceptable target of 0. Although our level has been stable for the past three years, this represents a better result than in 2021 and a new record:

  • Engis: 43 days without loss time injury. Tf ITT 2022 of 6.57;
  • Puurs: 247 days without loss time injury. Tf ITT 2022 of 3.47;
  • Les Roches: 298 days without loss time injury. Tf ITT 2022 of 8.91;
  • Augusta: 640 days without loss time injury. Tf ITT 2022 of 0.

By comparison, the average Tf for the Belgian chemical industry was 7.42 in 2021 (latest available value).

After an interruption due to the health situation, the Group Safety Day was renewed in 2022 and placed under the banner of shared vigilance.

In terms of well-being in the workplace, various initiatives for Prayon Group staff have been implemented at the various sites, including:

  • Creation of a “right to disconnect” Charter before it becomes a legal obligation;
  • Provision of molded noise protectors and safety glasses with corrective lenses;
  • Implementation of the “Together towards a new breath” campaign to inform and reflect on tobacco use;
  • Allocation of a changing room for female staff and refurbishment of a canteen for maintenance staff at the Les Roches site (FR);
  • Organization of the traditional soccer tournament (85 participants) and participation in the Ekiden (11 teams).

Our achievements in 2022

  • Continued measures for reducing loss time injuries have resulted in a further reduction in the frequency rate (from 5.4 to 5.3), enabling the Prayon Group to once again meet the set target and perform better than the average for the Belgian chemical industry;
  • In these times of successive crises (health crisis, conflict in Ukraine, energy crisis, etc.) we have used our partner Pulso to provide psychosocial support to our employees and their families if required;
  • 25% of the CAPEX budget (i.e. €8.4 million) was dedicated to safety and infrastructure rehabilitation, which allowed improvements that include:
    • Engis: reinforcement of site security, securing of a footbridge, expansion of fire-fighting systems, etc.;
    • Puurs: renovation of the pump station at tank park no. 3, optimization of a gypsum bunker, improvement of gas extraction, etc.;
    • Les Roches: improvement of silo emptying, securing of stainless steel area, etc.;
    • Augusta: repair of lime unloading bay rails and concrete, management of tank flows, etc.
